| White wins special election for vacant council seat Originally published October 06, 2010 By Brian Englar News-Post Staff | ||||
BRUNSWICK -- Business owner Angel White won Tuesday's special council election, handily defeating former Mayor Dick Goodrich. White, who owns and operates Head-Quarters hair salon on Potomac Street, will take over the council seat left vacant when former Councilman Jeremy Biser resigned in July. The term ends in 2012. White received 257 votes to Goodrich's 191. Overall, 455 votes were cast -- representing just under 14 percent of the active registered voters in Brunswick -- including several provisional and absentee ballots that haven't been counted. In the August general election, 603 voters went to the polls. This was the second campaign in a two-month period for White, who fell just a few votes short of election in August. "I'm relieved," White said. "It was well worth the extra work." White said she expects an adjustment period where she will need to focus on learning how the council operates. "I want to first get grounded and know what some of the procedures are that I'm not aware of yet," she said. "But I'm ready to dive in and look at everything that's going on." Goodrich, who served as mayor from 1990 to 1994, said he would have liked to have served on the council, but that he was happy for his friend White. "I wish Angel all the success," Goodrich said. "Voters are probably saying 'I want younger people, let's give them a chance,' and that's great." Goodrich said he will continue to stay involved in Brunswick politics, and doesn't rule out running again in 2012. "It's not out of the question," he said. |
